Best done November to March
Yearly Flagpole Maintenance
Almost every repair call we take started as wear nobody noticed. Rope fades, a pulley gets stiff, a flag clip wears thin, a flag starts to fray. A yearly check from the bucket truck catches those while they are small, and keeps the flag flying instead of stuck at half mast.
Winter is the best time to get it done. November through March is the easiest time to get on our schedule, and your pole is ready before spring and the summer holidays, when everyone wants their flag flying. We handle residential poles and commercial poles up to 60 feet.
What a maintenance visit covers
Check the rope
We look the halyard rope over from top to bottom for fading, fraying and wear where it runs over the pulley.
Check the flag clips
The clips that hold the flag to the rope wear thin and can let go in the wind. We make sure each one is sound.
Check the flag
Sun and wind wear a flag out. We look for fading and frayed edges so you know when it is time for a new one.
Check the pulley system
From the bucket truck we make sure the pulley at the top of the pole turns freely and the rope runs smoothly.
Lubricate winch poles
On winch style poles, where the flag is raised with a crank, we lubricate the winch so it keeps turning smoothly.
What we check, and why
| Part | What goes wrong if it is missed |
|---|---|
| Rope | Fades and frays in the sun until it snaps, often with the flag still up. |
| Flag clips | Wear thin and let go, and the flag comes loose in the wind. |
| Flag | Fades and frays at the edges, and a torn flag only tears faster. |
| Pulley system | Seizes, then the rope saws into the housing and jams. |
| Winch (winch style poles) | Goes stiff without lubrication and gets hard to crank. |
Why bring this job to us
Small fixes, not big ones
A new rope or pulley on a maintenance visit costs far less than a repair after it fails.
Parts on the van
We carry rope, pulleys and flag clips, so worn parts can usually be swapped the same day.
We own the lift
Commercial poles up to 60 feet are checked from our own bucket truck.
Questions about flagpole maintenance
Once a year suits most poles. Poles in open, windy spots, and poles where the flag goes up and down every day, wear faster and benefit most from a regular check.
November to March is the easiest time to get on our schedule. It also means any worn parts are replaced before spring and the summer holidays, when you want the flag flying.
Yes. We service poles no matter who put them in, residential and commercial, rope and pulley or winch style.
Small wear parts like rope and flag clips we can usually replace on the spot. If we find something bigger, like a seized truck assembly or a pole that has started to lean, we tell you what it is and what it will take before we do the work.
Yes. Schools, dealerships and businesses with more than one pole can have them all checked in the same visit.
